The Ridges Sanctuary in Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, is a 1,600-acre preserve founded in 1937 as the state’s first land trust. Recognized as a National Natural Landmark, an Important Bird Area, and a Wisconsin State Natural Area, it is noted for karst topography, a rare occurrence of raw humus rendzina soil, and diverse native orchids. Its orchid restoration project cultivates and reintroduces rare species, while surveys have documented 28 wild native orchid species. The sanctuary also includes the historic Baileys Harbor Range Lights and the Cook-Albert Fuller Nature Center, reflecting both natural significance and a long tradition of stewardship in Door County.
