In 1710, the first settlement in Lancaster County was laid out in the Pequea Creek Tract, a tract five miles long containing 6,400 acres, with lines run 12 degrees from the cardinals and an added 6 percent for roads, including the old Conestoga Road. The plan identified the Mennonite church and Herr grave, the old Christian Herr House of 1719, the big spring, the old Miller graveyard, and the locations of West Willow, Willow Street, Lampeter Square, and Strasburg Borough. The first landowners were Martin Kindig, Martin Meylin, Christian Herr, Martin Kindig again, John Hans Herr, Wendall Bowman, J. Rudolph Bundely, Chr'st'r Franciscus, Jacob Miller, John Funk, and Martin Kindig again, with holdings ranging from 264 to 1,060 acres.
