Hiram Williams Pursell, born in Nockamixon Township, served in the 6th and 104th Pennsylvania Volunteers beginning in 1861. As a regiment flag bearer at Fair Oaks, Virginia, on May 31, 1862, he was wounded twice, faced the advancing enemy while the Union Army was in retreat, and saved another regiment’s color from capture after its bearer was killed. Sergeant Pursell was honorably discharged on September 30, 1864, awarded the Medal of Honor on May 12, 1894, and immortalized in William Trego's Rescue Of The Colors.
