General Alfred Mouton, who lived from 1829 to 1864, fell here. Prince C. J. de Polignac served as lieutenant colonel in July 1861, colonel of the 5th Tennessee Infantry in August 1862, brigadier general in February 1863, and major general in April 1864. He was twice promoted for gallantry on the fields of Richmond, Kentucky, and Mansfield, Louisiana. Here, after Mouton fell, Prince de Polignac sprang to the head of the troops, took the fallen leader's place, and bore them to victory.
