At Brown Chapel in Selma, Alabama, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Sycamore shaded King and his followers before their historic 50-mile march to Montgomery, Alabama. Dr. King is remembered for his absolute standard of non-violent demonstrations to create social change that challenged a nation and changed history. The sycamore is the largest native hardwood east of the Mississippi and may live up to 400 years. Sycamores are easily identified in winter by their smooth, mottled bark. The wood is used for specialty items such as butcher blocks, furniture, and flooring.
