At her birthplace in Atchison, Kansas, the Amelia Earhart Sugar Maple honors the famous pilot whose branches stretch toward the sky. In 1932, Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. She was last heard from in 1937 after logging 22,000 miles in an attempt to fly around the world, and neither she nor her plane was ever found. The sugar maple is the most important and abundant maple species in North America, valued for sap that yields syrup and sugar in the spring and for its brilliant orange-yellow fall foliage.
