Ken Lum's The Space Between Scott and Plessy, a 2013 cast bronze, wood, and mixed media work commissioned for Laumeier Sculpture Park, connects St. Louis and New Orleans through Dred Scott and Homer Plessy, two men of color as then defined whose challenges to laws allowing segregation before and after the Civil War gave them an important place in American history. Lum memorializes them in the traditional form of three-quarters bronze busts, separated yet facing one another across the land and surrounded by small plots of flowers native to their communities. The work continues his exploration of shifting demographics in the modern world and presents globalization not only as the movement of money but as a more unfettered connection between people of different socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.
