Mount Stanford is a remote 12,838-foot Sierra Nevada summit in northern California, on the boundary between Sierra and Inyo national forests and between Fresno and Mono counties. Its rugged setting gives it strong local relief, with steep rises above McGee Creek and drainage flowing north toward Crowley Lake and south through Pioneer Basin to the South Fork San Joaquin River. The name was assigned during a 1907–1909 U.S. Geological Survey expedition led by Robert Bradford Marshall to honor Leland Stanford, later formalized as Stanford Peak in 1911 and changed to Mount Stanford in 1982. It is also one of four Pioneer Basin summits named for the Central Pacific Railroad’s Big Four.
