On August 31, 1862, the 20th and 30th Illinois Infantry camped in the mulberry trees behind Denmark Presbyterian Church. Denmark was a fairly large town and a major shopping point for the armies. On September 1, 1862, the 30th Illinois began marching from Denmark to Medon's Station and, on the dusty country road called Britton Lane, met the Southern army, where they fought for four hours and no one was credited with winning the battle.
