Federal soldiers fought with courage and honor on this sacred ground on September 1st, 1862, in the Battle of Britton's Lane. Union units that participated in the battle were the 20th Illinois Infantry, 30th Illinois Infantry, 4th Ohio Independent Cavalry, 4th Illinois Cavalry with 34 soldiers, and 2nd Illinois Light Artillery, Company E (Schwartz's) with 2 pieces. Honor is given to the soldiers who fought in this engagement, especially those killed here and the many more who died afterward from their wounds.
