Robert "Bob" Turley, a former major league baseball pitcher and native of Troy, Illinois, was born in 1930 and signed by St. Louis Browns owner Bill DeWitt in 1948. After minor league action, two seasons with the Browns, service in Korea, and a move to Baltimore, he was traded to the New York Yankees, where he won the 1958 Cy Young Award and was named the World Series MVP. Nicknamed "Bullet Bob" for his 98mph fastball, Turley later retired to found the insurance company that would become Primerica Financial Services.
