Davy Crockett National Forest in southeast Texas spans 160,647 acres of Piney Woods woodland between Lufkin and Crockett, with the Neches River along its northeastern edge. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service for timber, grazing, oil production, hunting, and recreation, it combines public access with a continuing working-forest role. Ratcliff Lake is its main recreation area, while the Four C National Recreation Trail preserves traces of the region’s early twentieth-century logging era, including former rail and tram grades. On the forest’s northeastern margin, the Big Slough Wilderness protects floodplain, old-growth bottomland forest, swamp, and open water within a diverse East Texas wildlife habitat.
