Challenger Point is a 14,084.6-foot mountain in Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Range near Crestone, on the northwest shoulder of Kit Carson Mountain and regarded as a subpeak of it. Its significance comes chiefly from its renaming in the 1980s to honor the seven astronauts killed in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster on January 28, 1986. Proposed by Colorado Springs resident Dennis Williams, the name was approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names on April 9, 1987. That memorial meaning was reinforced in July 1987, when Alan Silverstein led an expedition to place a small commemorative plaque on the summit, linking the mountain with a defining American space tragedy.
