Kaufman Lodge No. 726, A.F. & A.M., was chartered in Scurry on December 11, 1891, after 16 members sought a lodge in the 8-year-old town because heavy rains in the 1880s often made roads to Kaufman impassable. The first Masonic lodge in Kaufman County had been Bloomfield Lodge No. 112 in Kaufman. The first officers of Kaufman Lodge were S.J. Modisett, Thomas Martin, and J. W. McFarland. Despite relocations caused by fires, the lodge grew steadily, weathered both prosperous and difficult financial periods, served as a center of community activity and public service, raised and spent money for those in need in keeping with Masonic tradition, and provided leaders for Scurry and the surrounding area while remaining active in medical aid and public education.
