The Tollgate House was one of two tollgate houses erected by the Wellsburg and Washington Turnpike Company in 1834. It served taking tolls on the Pike until 1910. The other tollgate house was located one-half mile east of Wellsburg and was torn down when the Pike was rebuilt in the 1930's. The house located here is now owned by Brooke Hills Park and is occupied as a residence.
