The Baxter Springs Civil War Memorial honors officers and soldiers killed in the Battle of Baxter Springs on October 8, 1863, and in other engagements in the surrounding vicinity who were buried near the monument and whose names were known. It names the dead from units including the 13th Kansas Infantry, 14 Kansas Cavalry, 79 U.S.C.T., 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry, Brigade Band, 2nd Kansas Battery, 9th Kansas Cavalry, 2nd Ohio Cavalry, 83rd U.S.C.T., 9th Wisconsin Infantry, 12th Kansas Infantry, and 15th Kansas Cavalry, as well as civilians buried there.
