On October 6, 1863, during a raid upon Baxter Springs, guerrillas led by the infamous Quantrell attacked General James G. Blunt and his defenseless escort, who fell victim to the attackers' inhuman ferocity; 135 Union soldiers were slain and now sleep in Baxter Springs National Cemetery.
