Durand Eastman Park is a 977-acre park on Lake Ontario spanning Rochester and Irondequoit, created through an early twentieth-century effort to preserve public shoreline access. Henry S. Durand and George Eastman bought farmland and gave it to Rochester for permanent parkland, leading to the park’s dedication in 1909. Over time it added bath houses, a privately funded zoo, and a golf course, while also becoming known for its woods, lakes, trails, plantings, and wildlife. Administration later shifted to Monroe County, Camp Eastman was sold to Irondequoit, and swimming at the beach resumed in 2006 after a forty-year interruption.
