In late June 1832, Texian militia attacked and captured the newly built Fort Velasco, occupied by a Mexican army garrison of about 150 men at the mouth of the Brazos. Fighting lasted several days just south of this location, where the battle dead are thought to be buried. The fallen included Antonio Buckner, Aylett "Strap" Buckner, Andrew Castleman, Matthew Thomas Hines, Edward Robertson, William C. Smith, David Webb, Leander Woods, and Isaac Jamieson. Survivors planned in late 1832 to honor them with a monument at Monument Square, and an 1833 Arkansas Advocate article described a white marble column four feet high and two and a half feet broad on each side, surmounted by a one-foot urn holding on parchment the names of subscribing citizen soldiers who had been present in the action. Archaeological surveys and historical research found no evidence that this monument was built at that time, but it was recreated in 2023 at the site associated with the battle burials.
