Santa Anna signed Treaties of Velasco

3
After the Battle of San Jacinto, Santa Anna was held prisoner in Velasco and negotiated with the ad interim government of the new Republic of Texas at the nearby American Hotel. Several of his officers were imprisoned with him, including Ramon Martinez Caro, his secretary, and Colonels Juan Almonte and Gabriel Nunez Ortega. They apparently lived in the Haskins house on Lots 7 and 8 in Velasco Block 11, with Texas guards housed nearby, and were fed from the kitchen of the American Hotel. During their stay, Gabriel Nunez Ortega recorded poor conditions, flies, discussions about the agreement, Colonel Wharton's assistance in the negotiations, and the theft of their trunk. On May 14, 1836, Santa Anna signed the public and private Treaties of Velasco near this spot, ending the Texas Revolution and giving Texas its independence. Under the treaties, he was to be returned to Mexico and was placed aboard the Invincible off Velasco on June 1, 1836 for passage to Veracruz, but he was instead brought ashore at Quintana on June 4 for safekeeping, stayed a few days with Thomas F. McKinney, returned to Velasco and remained at the American Hotel until June 15, after which William H. Patton took charge of the prisoners and brought them to his family's plantation two miles upriver from Columbia.
