Woodall Mountain, in the Appalachian foothills of northeastern Mississippi south of Iuka, is the state’s highest natural point at 806 feet. Once called Yow Hill, it is reached by a steep unpaved road and has a survey disk, radio towers, a bench, a register, and a gravel turnaround; an observation tower there was removed in 1998 after deteriorating. The height also figured in the Battle of Iuka on September 19, 1862, when Union General William Rosecrans used it to direct artillery fire toward the town held by General Sterling Price. Named for Zephaniah Woodall, it is remembered more as Mississippi’s high point than as a dramatic mountain.
