The Groce family were pioneers in this Texas area, with an early cotton gin and ferry. The founder, Jared E. Groce (1782-1836), came to Texas in 1822, and his large wagon train brought elaborate plantation equipment. Groce built Bernardo and Groce's Retreat. His heirs built Pleasant Hill, Eagle Island, and Liendo, the only surviving Groce mansion, 2 mi. northwest of here. The family contributed to the cause of Texas freedom by providing rations and ferry service to Gen. Houston's army on the eve of the San Jacinto victory, and descendants of the family have contributed leadership to the state.
