This farm was the boyhood home of John Carl West, born in 1922, who served as governor of South Carolina from 1971 to 1975. A graduate of the Citadel and the University of S.C., West served as an intelligence officer in World War II, as a state senator from 1955 to 1966, and as lieutenant governor from 1967 to 1971 before his term as governor. He was later U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 1977 to 1981.
