Markhors can climb as high as 15'-20' in trees to eat leaves. They are hunted for meat, and their horns are valued as trophies and as ingredients in the Asian medicine trade. Their habitat has been reduced by expanded human settlement, and they compete with domestic livestock on grazing lands. Some markhor populations have disappeared altogether, and local hunters now have access to an abundance of weapons because of the wars in Afghanistan. Their diet includes grass, leaves, and twigs, and they live on arid cliff sides in sparsely wooded regions.
