The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, founded as Riverside Park in 1927 near Powell, Ohio, grew from Harry P. Wolfe’s early efforts after a 1920 visit to the St. Louis zoo. After financial struggles, city management began in 1951 and ownership passed in 1970 to a nonprofit association. Its modern prominence developed under director Jack Hanna, whose tenure from 1978 brought renovated naturalistic habitats, national publicity, and sharply rising attendance. Now spanning 580 acres, it features major exhibits, extensive conservation work, and related attractions. After losing accreditation in 2021 amid mismanagement concerns, it regained Association of Zoos and Aquariums accreditation in 2023.
