Fallasburg Bridge is an 1871 covered wooden bridge over the Flat River in Vergennes Township, north of Lowell, and one of only four covered bridges in Michigan still open to vehicle traffic. Built by Jared N. Bresee after earlier crossings here were destroyed by high water and ice, it is a 100-foot Brown truss span using white pine timbers and minimal iron. The crossing served a village founded in 1837 by John W. and Silas S. Fallas, which grew as a stage stop with mills and a chair factory. Preserved through major repairs, the bridge remains a rare surviving link to Michigan’s 19th-century transportation and settlement landscape.
