Point Bas marked the lower limit of the upper Wisconsin country and was called Ban-Gah-Je-Wung by Indians. The first sawmill was built just below here by Daniel Whitney in 1831. In 1836, the Menominee Indians ceded a strip three miles wide on both sides of the Wisconsin from Point Bas to forty miles upstream. Joshua Hathaway surveyed the cession in 1839.
