The York Fair began in 1765, when Thomas Penn, son of William Penn, issued a charter allowing York to hold two fairs every year. Known as America's oldest fair, it has long showcased the area's abundant agricultural products and diversified industrial community. It was originally located on the Town Common under a land grant from Thomas Penn, later moved to King and Queen Streets, and then moved to its current location in West Manchester in 1888. Today, it is held annually in September on its 120-acre grounds west of downtown York.
