In 1831 the village was incorporated under the name "Ulster." In 1855 the village changed its name to "Saugerties," originating from the Dutch phrase "dezaagertjes," meaning "the Little Sawyer," a reference from Dutchman Barent Cornelis Volge, who operated a sawmill along the stream called Sawyers Mill.
