Panther Mountain stands in Central New York near Fly Creek and Schuyler Lake in Otsego County. Its eastern slope drains into Fly Creek, while its western side drains toward Oaks Creek and Canadarago Lake, linking it closely to the area’s waterways. The mountain was named for The Panther, a Mohegan who lived in the Town of Richfield in the early to mid 1800s. Local tradition holds that this was his favorite hunting ground, so the mountain’s name preserves both a distinct feature of regional geography and the memory of a Native man connected to the local landscape.
