Bear Creek
Science & Tech
Bear Creek is an iron meteorite discovered in 1866 in Jefferson County, Colorado, in the United States. Once called the Colorado meteorite, it is classified as an octahedrite within the IIIAB iron group. It weighs 226.7 kilograms, or 500 pounds, and has reported average dimensions of 350 by 250 by 11 millimetres. Its importance rests in part on that classification, because IIIAB is the largest class of iron meteorites, placing Bear Creek among one of the best-known groups of metallic meteorites found on Earth.
