The Wabash and Erie Canal passed through town at the foot of Main Street, where a depot stood. Operations through Petersburg ceased in 1860. Constructed from 1832 to 1853, the canal was the nation’s longest, connecting Lake Erie at Toledo with the Ohio River at Evansville through Fort Wayne, Lafayette, and Terre Haute.
