Roddy Road Covered Bridge
Science & Tech
Roddy Road Covered Bridge near Thurmont, Maryland, carries a single lane over Owen's Creek in a small wooden covered span built sometime between 1850 and 1860. Using a king post truss, one of the simpler traditional bridge designs, it measures 40 feet long and 16 feet wide, with a clearance of 12 feet 8 inches. Its importance rests on its survival as a modest but intact example of the covered bridges that once served rural road networks and preserved 19th-century transportation character. In 1978, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as both a historic structure and a functioning crossing.
