From 1875 until 1915, children in the Klondike Community in southern DeKalb County attended Powell Academy on S. Goddard Rd. The one room school could house 25-30 students and was named for pioneer resident George Washington Powell, who donated the land. It was relocated and restored in 1987 by, and with a grant from, J.
