Gilmer

Founded in 1846, Gilmer was named for Thomas W. Gilmer, U. S. Secretary of the Navy and an ardent champion of annexation for Texas. During the Civil War, it served as a supply, training, production, and educational center. It later became a farming, lumbering, and oil hub and is home of the famous Annual Yamboree, Sweet Potato Festival.
