Safety Harbor’s first newspaper, the Tropical Breeze, was started by A.G. Waldron in 1915 and ran for approximately one year from a building at the northwest corner of what is now John Wilson Park. After it ceased publication, the Board of Trade approached former newspaperman Alva Ernest (A.E.) Shower to become publisher. Renamed the Safety Harbor Herald, the paper issued its first edition in June 1916 at four pages and within a few years had expanded to between 12 and 16 pages, appearing unfailingly each Friday morning, even on Christmas Day. The newspaper moved to 509 Main Street in 1920. A.E. Shower retired in 1957 and died in 1961 at age 84, and he was regarded as one of the city’s most influential pioneers. The Shower family continued operating the paper until 1976, when Tarpon Springs City Commissioner Bea Raynard and her husband Ray purchased it. Jean and George Graham bought the paper in 1987, and the Safety Harbor Herald ceased publication in June 1989.
