Pennsbury Manor stands on the Delaware River in present-day Falls Township as the preserved site of William Penn’s colonial estate, established soon after his 1682 arrival in Pennsylvania as part of his “Holy Experiment” of religious freedom. Built as an English-style country seat and later used as Penn’s principal colonial residence from 1699 to 1701, the estate declined after his return to England and the original buildings vanished over time. The current house is a twentieth-century reconstruction shaped by archaeology and documentary research, making the site important both for understanding Penn’s life and for tracing changing approaches to preservation, colonial memory, and Lenape reinterment.
