This fully planned residential community of six home styles was conceived by builder William J. Levitt, and the first family moved in on June 23, 1952. When completed in 1957, it contained 17,311 homes on 5,750 acres, designed for a population of 70,000. Expanding on the pattern set by Levittown, N.Y., built from 1947 to 1951, it became a landmark in the development of suburban housing in the United States.
