Charcoal Kilns
Warwick Township, Pennsylvania
· Charring in ovens
Industry
1
In the mid-1800s, brick ovens or kilns were built here in an attempt to modernize the charcoal-making process. Thought to be economically beneficial, the kilns fired and produced charcoal but proved unsuccessful. Laborers used iron-toothed rakes to draw hot, newly made charcoal out of the kilns, and workers hauled charcoal to the cooling shed on the left. Today the only indication of the charcoal kilns is these ruins.
