Ambrose Hopkinson built this home in 1874, and it opened as a museum in 1991. He built the school building at the southwest corner of the intersection, where 10 grades were housed along with the first high school in the county, which opened in 1871. The M.E. Church stood at the northwest corner of the intersection. Kitchell Avenue was named for Judge Alfred Kitchell, who gave land for the church, parsonage, and school, and who also persuaded the E/W Railroad to swerve north to better serve the city.
