Clawson State Savings Bank, the first bank in Clawson, opened in 1925 in this building with advanced security features that included bullet proof glass on the cashiers cages, steel doors on all safes, electronically operated alarms and timers on the concrete-reinforced vault, and gun loops for the cashiers. Although it was promoted as impervious to robbery and fire, no attempt was ever made to rob it, and the original vault still remains in the basement. During the Depression, the bank avoided closure for several months while many other banks shut down, but it was forced to close in May 1933 when nervous depositors lined up and demanded their cash. All customers eventually received the funds they had on deposit. The building was later used as a restaurant and housed the Wayne Oakland Bank in 1947.
