The site marks the first white settler in Mifflin Township, who arrived in 1809, was a friend of Johnny Appleseed, served as a missionary to the Greentown Indians from 1809 to 1812, and was massacred by Indians on September 15, 1812. The Copus Monument was dedicated on September 15, 1882.
