William G. "Bunk" Johnson

William "Bunk" Johnson inspired the music that shaped Louis Armstrong in the 1910s, though Armstrong became the more famous New Orleans jazz trumpeter. About thirty years later, Armstrong and other jazz enthusiasts helped lift Johnson from working in rice and sugarcane fields by day and playing with a small-town Banner Band by night to international recognition in the New Orleans Jazz Revival. Johnson was laid to rest in 1949, but his influence on jazz lovers endures.
