The Saranac Iron Works included a Catalan forge and rolling mill. The first forge on the river was established in 1826. Under Baker-Hull-Hopper, the works produced iron regarded as the world's best quality and used in Civil War ironclads. Bowen-Signor closed the works in 1887.
