The Silver Lake branch of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad was 7.6 miles long and connected Perry with Silver Springs. Opened in 1871, the line had stops in the Silver Lake Institute and served the community for 102 years. Passenger service ended on August 4, 1951, with the final run of Baltimore and Ohio trains 67 and 68 in and out of Perry. Freight service continued for another 22 years, and the line closed on June 26, 1973, before being abandoned soon after. The tracks ran lakeside in what is now referred to as the green space in the Institute.
