Edward Austin Sheldon was a leader in education and an advocate of free public schools who was responsible for the opening of Oswego Normal School in May 1861. A pioneer in education method and object teaching, his ideas became a model for other normal schools throughout the nation and the world. John Francis Brines designed the statue, which was constructed with penny contributions throughout New York State in 1888.
