In 1777, residents of the area that later became Grayson County while it was still part of Montgomery County, Virginia, swore or affirmed an oath renouncing allegiance to George III, King of Great Britain, and pledging faithful allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia as a free and independent state, while also promising to report treasons or traitorous conspiracies against Virginia or any of the United States of America. The surviving first muster roll includes men in Captain John Cox’s Company and Captain Enoch Ozburn’s Company, and additional Revolutionary War militia and patriots from the Grayson County area are also identified. During the war, two forts were erected on New River: the Cox Fort at the mouth of Peach Bottom Creek in 1778 and the Ozburn Fort between Bridle and Saddle Creeks by 1780.
