The University of Wisconsin–Madison Lakeshore Nature Preserve is a 300-acre reserve stretching about 4 miles along Lake Mendota, where native habitats, campus landscapes, research, and recreation meet. Its history reaches back roughly 12,000 years through ancient footpaths, archaeological evidence at Picnic Point and Frautschi Point, and burial mounds in Eagle Heights Woods. The preserve also reflects later farming, drainage, restoration, and development pressures, including the recovery of Class of 1918 Marsh and the protection of Wally Bauman Woods. Today its woods, marshes, and shoreline preserve both ecological richness and a deep record of human use along the lakeshore.
