Near State College, Pennsylvania, the Houserville Site preserves an open prehistoric stone-working area used by Native Americans roughly ten thousand years ago during the Early and Middle Archaic periods. Excavations beginning in 1979 found projectile points, scrapers, drills, and more than seven hundred lithic flakes, showing that people shaped yellow jasper there and also carried out hunting-related work and hide processing. The jasper, often called Bald Eagle Jasper, was likely quarried and heat-treated at the nearby Tudek Site before being brought here. The site is important for understanding Archaic life, regional movement and exchange, and changing stone technologies in central Pennsylvania.
