Jefferson Davis State Historic Site in Fairview, Kentucky, marks the birthplace of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America. Its centerpiece is a 351-foot concrete obelisk on a 19-acre site, proposed in 1907 by Simon Bolivar Buckner Sr. Construction began in 1917, halted during World War I in 1918, resumed in January 1922, and finished in 1924 at a cost of $200,000. Built on limestone bedrock with stone quarried on-site, it is notable as the world’s tallest unreinforced concrete structure and tallest concrete obelisk. The park, listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, is maintained by the Kentucky Department of Parks.
